A novel that is easy to read (22 fairly short chapters), but which, I must say, does not excite that much, this is what we can summarize, quickly, about this “Woman with Two Smiles”, in which Arsène Lupine hides once again, throughout, under another identity (but no reader is fooled): Raoul. Eventually, we end up knowing Raoul…
Gorgeret, chief inspector, is on the trail of a certain Clara la Blonde, mistress of Grand Paul, a thug that the police have been tracking for a long time. Monsieur Raoul, a somewhat mysterious man, is interested in this young woman (he has connections in the police and has heard about the hunt) and, happy coincidence, a young woman who is none other than Clara comes to ring his bell. door, by mistake (she was going, in fact, to the floor above that of Raoul’s apartment). While Gorgeret, who was tracking her, is about to arrest her at Raoul’s, the latter makes her leave quietly and will help her in several other ways, interested as he is in the young woman with multiple identities ( Clara, Antonine…) and the secret she hides…
A nice novel, but minor, really secondary (without being the worst in the series), which will undoubtedly be a good little read, but which, in the end, will not stay in the memory for long.
