Brittany News in Brief

50 years of action for reunification

This book, the result of meetings, extensive research and the support of the Bretagne Réunie association, clearly shows why reunification is not a political issue but rather the need to put an end to a unique and abnormal situation: the division into two administrative zones of the same human community with a common history, culture and roots.

This unique situation in France and, to our knowledge, in Europe, has given rise to actions and struggles for over 50 years. The book, based on marketing and mainly on brand names, allows us to understand how to differentiate ourselves and thus be visible in this 21st century where the globalist trend has the function of standardizing people and individuals.

This book is intended not only for those who are convinced of the need for reunification, but also for those who are not familiar with the problem in order to form a clear idea on the issue.

Vannes 39-45, a city in turmoil

Under the enlightened direction of historians Yves-Marie Evanno and Olivier Porteau, sixteen students from Breton universities have gathered a considerable amount of archives, most of which have never been published, in order to fill this historiographical gap. Their meticulous research has shed new light on the history of the city, from the beginnings of the declaration of war to the aftermath of the German capitulation.

The captivating reading of this book allows you to discover, or rediscover, the unique history of the prefecture of Morbihan during the conflict through the prism of civilians, soldiers, but also that of local administrations. Vannes 1939-1945, a Breton city in turmoil goes beyond the framework of a simple work of local history. By offering an in-depth and nuanced analysis of events and behaviors during the conflict, it allows you to grasp with finesse the multiplicity of human experiences in times of war.

Ernest Guérin, Breton painter and illuminator

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition at the Musée du Faouët dedicated to the Breton painter Ernest Guérin (1887-1952). The collection presented offers a journey to the country of this artist whose art is entirely devoted to Brittany, in his illuminations as well as in his landscape painting. Fascinated by the Middle Ages and its legends, he drew inspiration from them for his miniatures and also for his frames, an inseparable element of his work. Deeply attached to regional culture, Guérin expresses it in particular in the watercolour representation of the pardons of Lower Brittany. The land, the sea and the sky reveal the Breton soul as much as the characters who are, most often, reduced to small coloured silhouettes. A collection of nearly one hundred and fifty works, some of which are unpublished.

Anne Le Roux-Le Pimpec — Director of the Musée du Faouët since 1996, curator of temporary exhibitions, Anne Le Roux – Le Pimpec co-wrote the catalogues for the following exhibitions: The Musée du Faouët is 100 years old! (2014), 100 professions seen by artists in Brittany (2017), The Child in Breton Painting (2018), Painters between land and sea – from Faouët to Concarneau (2019), The Peasant in Breton Painting (2021), The Portrait in Painting in Brittany (2022) and A Collector in the Footsteps of Painters in Brittany (2023).

Jean-Paul Eyraud — Jean-Paul Eyraud ran a large accounting and auditing firm in Brittany. Alongside his professional activity, he developed a passion for the arts and painting in particular. He worked to rediscover the work of Ernest Guérin by creating the Association of Friends of Ernest Guérin, thus allowing the publication of the book Ernest Guérin, Imagier breton (2001), the major Guérin retrospective in Rennes and Quimper in 2001-2002, and the exhibition dedicated to the painter at the Festival of Arts in Saint Briac-sur-Mer in 2006.
