Above all dedicated to book lending, the Melle media library is also a place for events, exhibitions and work. Focus on its operation and its next meetings with its manager Sylvie Gadat.
A major weeding campaign is underway until the end of January. For what ?
Sylvie Gadat: “Each year we acquire nearly three hundred books, novels, comics and documents combined. We also have help from the departmental library for more specific books. We also benefit from numerous donations, particularly for local books, which are always widely borrowed.
“A relay of the associative life of Melle”
We put up for sale, at a very low price, documents that are mainly too damaged or whose content is obsolete. This is the case for scientific documents that are too old. For novels, it’s more complicated. There are sometimes some which are never borrowed but which we judge to deserve to always be available. Nor can we only acquire books that we are sure will please. You also have to take risks. Melle has very different tastes. »
What is the place of digital?
S.G. : “It worked a lot during Covid, a little out of obligation, but I feel there is real interest there. Sometimes for practical reasons. A very large novel is sometimes too heavy for an elderly person. We offer the free loan of an e-reader, and we install the requested novel on it. There are also computers available, they are widely used. The media library is also a place of work and research. The digital advisor is present every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. »
Is the media library also a place for entertainment?
S.G. : “I see the media library as a relay for Melle’s community life. We also have books made available by associations such as Bouillonnants, the Ateliers de la simplicity, the music school and Fil en Melle. We also offer digital game consoles thanks to the departmental media library. We see young people whose parents do not want these devices in their homes. Here, it’s for a limited time of one hour. »
Why did you launch a survey among members?
S.G. : “We have been here for twenty-four years and we want to reorganize everything. We want to develop the place, but we need everyone’s opinion. We already have more than eighty responses. The questionnaire is available at the media library. »

As part of Festisol, the media library is hosting a free collective reading workshop, Friday November 22, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., around a book by Fiore Longo, Let’s decolonize nature protection. “This is a plea for indigenous peoples in environmental matters, presents Élodie Martin, host of Cimade de Melle. This workshop will be done in the form of surveying. It is a method invented during the workers’ struggles in the 19e. The workers wanted to read Capital by Karl Marx. The book being quite undrinkable, they had the idea of cutting it up, each reading a part, before sharing. A way to tackle an interesting but complex book. This way of doing things is also a way of thinking politically. We will see together the strong ideas but also the sensations created by reading. » The workshop will begin with a presentation, followed by individual reading for 45 minutes and then an hour of discussions.
