Many poets, essayists, novelists and playwrights, above all curious about their time, have asked themselves in what ways and what procedures art, particularly literature, could approach reality. How can we produce “flashes of truth” (Conrad), create “lanterns that illuminate the present”?

The reflections on theater and literature collected here attempt to evaluate – beyond the themes and conceptions which overlap and follow one another, despite the impasses and changes of orientation – the multiple paths which lead literature to the theater, and theater to literature.
