In recent years, Pierre Sernaprofessor of history of revolution and empire at the University of 1-Panthéon Sorbonne (since 2008), participated in the creation of the collective work “The new history of Orléans” and the exhibition dedicated to “21 centuries of Orléans history, from Cenabum to the Metropolis”.

As a reminder, a project co-directed by Pierre Allorantprofessor of legal history and Gaël Rideauprofessor of modern history at the University of Orléans ().

During this collective project, Pierre Serna performs multiple searches as part of the creation of the chapter on the revolutionary period of Orléans. Nevertheless, given the quantity and richness of the information found, the historian said to himself that it would be interesting to make a book of it.

“I wanted to retrace the history of the Revolution in Orléans and explain why this period has been forgotten. The book covers the events of 1789 to 1820 and talks about how the city welcomed the Revolution,” he explains.

The prosperity of the city in particular founded by the slave trade and the sale of national goodsis then put to the test.

“Orléans will become, at least until the middle of the 20th century, a military city. It will be a place of passage for troops and wood for cannons as well as a uniform manufacturing area. The city is also experiencing major political battles between different parties and the Orléans sans-culottes, demanding a better sharing of wealth” adds Pierre Serna.

Four to five years of work were necessary to the creation of this workreleased in September by Editions du CNRS. He is now possible to find it everywhere.
