Marilyn Monroe by Eve Arnold, candid photos

The beginning of the 1950s marked a turning point in the career of Norma Jeane, newly renamed Marilyn Monroe. Calendar photos that trigger the scandal, one from the magazine Liferomance with baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, then, role as femme fatale at the forefront of the cult Men prefer blondesMarilyn Monroe is officially “What all Hollywood is talking about”. At the same time, Eve Arnold tried her hand at taking photos in the very masculine world of photojournalism, and in 1951 became the first female photographer to work for the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson and Bruce Davidson. Confronted with the magic of the big screen, Arnold documents the filming of Misaligned by John Huston. His lens captures Marilyn Monroe, movie star, in all her facets.

The artistic collaboration between the two women was encouraged by the actress herself, fascinated by the images of Marlene Dietrich taken by the photographer. “If you could do that with Marlene”Monroe told him during an evening in 1952, “can you imagine what you could do with me?” That evening, Eve Arnold found her muse. Although she documents a flamboyantly glittering 7th art industry, the photographer tends to capture a much less glamorous reality. While his film moves from great luxury to poverty, his prism touches Marilyn Monroe, in search of a deeper and more sincere representation. As the photographer expresses it, the movie star was convinced of his “a freer and more intimate look than the studio portraits she was accustomed to in Hollywood.” An authentic relationship for a stunning photographic collection.
