a new life for loose books

“We weeded well”rejoiced Nicolas Guégan-Bertin, the manager of the media library, on the evening of Sunday September 15. It was not at all about gardening and weed hunting around La Parenthese. In fact, in the world of books and libraries, weeding is the action of getting rid of books that are faded, obsolete or no longer in demand. Thus, a new “Bulk Books” operation was held on the square in front of the Cultural Space. We could therefore find (very) beautiful books for ridiculous prices. There are, however, some who have returned to the reserves.

No more pestle

But let us rest assured, the pestle, which consisted of destroying these books, has not been practiced for several years. From now on, these discarded works are given to associations which are responsible for recycling them by finding new readers. In Ballan-Miré, the Ammareal association was chosen to give new life to these works.

It wasn’t just the media library that emptied its shelves, individuals were invited to join this operation. About ten of them emptied their libraries. There were a lot of children’s books and comics. Parents hesitant to throw away or – worse – burn the books that their children, having left home, had loved to devour.
