With successful video game licenses, Sony is now trying to extend their reach through series and films. If the company is still in the first stages of these cross-media ambitions, it seems to want to pull out all the stops.
On the Horizon, nothing new
In 2017, Guerrilla Games surprised players with its Horizon Zero Dawn, his first production after a decade spent on the saga Killzone. Very well received by the press and the public, Zero Dawn will see a sequel in 2022, the two games also having an expansion each. So, Horizon quickly revealed itself as one of the licenses that the publisher hopes to be able to exploit to the maximum. It is in this sense that the Japanese firm revealed at CES the start of a film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn. Co-produced by Columbia Picture and PlayStation Productions, the announcement of the feature film follows the cancellation of a series project adapting the same game.

-Indeed, the showrunner of said series, Steve Blackman (Altered Carbon, The Umbrella Academy), was accused of toxic behavior and harassment towards several writers of the series The Umbrella Academysome even speaking of a recurring attitude on the part of the Canadian producer. The rumor of a cancellation of two series that Blackman was to showrun for Netflixtherefore including Horizon Zero Dawntook shape directly following these revelations. It would therefore seem that despite this “setback”, Sony took advantage of CES 2024 to reaffirm its perseverance in cross-media.
Monopoly
Sony has indeed not lost hope of exploiting its video game licensessince the company also announced a film project Helldivers and an animated series Ghost of Tsushima produite par Kakimaze Douga (Batman Ninja, Star Wars Visions). All this tends to remind us of the statements of Sony’s CEO, who had previously expressed the idea that the Japanese firm did not have enough IP “favored from the beginning”. With the success of the adaptation of The Last of Us in series, it is not incongruous to see Sony working hard to adapt its most popular licenses to the big and small screen.
Through these decisions, Sony is trying to consolidate its status as a cultural juggernaut all the more strengthened by its recent acquisitions in the field of Japanese animation. The firm has effectively offered itself a dominant position in the industry thanks to Crunchyroll, its streaming service specializing in anime, a platform which is also starting to branch out towards manga, notably thanks to the absorption of the distributor Kazé in France. It is certain that Sony will continue to strengthen its position in cross and transmedia in the years to cometaking advantage of its ownership of companies operating in different areas of the entertainment industry.
