After his first work, Schizophreniapublished in 2004, which retraced the experiences of people suffering from schizophrenia through poignant testimonies, Catherine Tobin, who lives near Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne) has just released a new book.

A guide for divorcing parents

At 67, this former journalist, specialist in health issues and former teacher of English and biology, presents her new work The Child of Divorcepublished by Odile Jacob in November.

“It is a guide and a reflection so that parents who are going through divorce also understand the suffering that it can cause in a child,” explains the author. A book which is the fruit of two years of investigation and six months of writing: “I am extremely proud of it,” she confides.

Children’s suffering

In this new work, she outlines the question of children of divorced parents, whose suffering has sometimes been neglected. As a teacher, she has closely observed the devastating effects of divorce on her students.

She therefore approaches divorce from the point of view of a child, with an innovative approach. The work is peppered with interviews with children who have now become adults, aged 18 and 70. She cross-references these testimonies with interviews with specialists such as child psychiatrists, family court judges, but also mediators.

“A short guide”

“I would describe this book as a little guide to organizing one’s life and above all sparing the child the choice, for example, not trying to find out what is happening to one or the other,” describes Catherine Tobin. A way of doing prevention without denying the suffering of parents, nor the upheavals, anger is the sadness that this can cause.

“I am a bit of a spokesperson for children and even if divorce has become common today, it should not be trivialized, each story remains unique, no two divorces are alike and we must take this into account,” concludes -She. The book has been available in bookstores since November 6.
