In the greatest of secrets, Ana tattoos babies with their mother’s deportation numbers, hoping that the mothers and children will eventually find each other.
To write the character of Ana, Anna Stuart was inspired by a midwife who really existed: Stanisława Leszczyńska. Incarcerated at the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Second World War in February 1943, she carried out 3,000 deliveries, before being released on January 27, 1945. Upon her release, Stanisława Leszczyńska resumed her work as a midwife. In the 1970s, she reunited with several women she had cared for in Auschwitz, as well as their children born in the camps.
