Glenn Verbauwhede released his book “Kamikaze”. In it, the former goalkeeper recounts in detail the anecdotes he experienced during his career. And some are worth the detour.
Having played for Club Brugge, Kortrijk, Westerlo and South Africa, Glenn Verbauwhede has a great career behind him, during which he played around a hundred Pro League matches. However, a question arises: couldn’t the native of Kortrijk, now 39 years old, have done even better?
“We’ll never know,” Verbauwhede told Newspaper of West Flanders in an interview given as part of the promotion of his book. “Top athletes who live their passion to the fullest go to bed at 9:30 p.m. I was still getting in my car at 11 p.m. to go for a drive. Go see friends, go out at night…”
Could Glenn Verbauwhede have been better than Thibaut Courtois?
Still, Verbauwhede was a great talent and, with the right approach, he certainly could have competed with men who are now among the world’s elite.
“I can safely say that in my youth I was one of the best goalkeepers in the country on an individual level. Maybe even better than Thibaut Courtois, but he had a slightly clearer head. Although I have no regret over the course my life has taken.”
It is undeniable that young talents are now much better followed than before. Glenn Verbauwhede also admits he played in a completely different era as a professional footballer, but the former goalkeeper lives without regrets. And that’s certainly the main thing.
