The manuscript of the novel “Anne of Green Gables” has been added to the United Nations register which highlights Canadian heritage.
The work of Lucy Maud Montgomery was included in Canada’s Memory of the World Register, administered by the Canadian Commission forUNESCOin honor of the author’s 150th birthday.
The register includes 475 handwritten pages by Ms. Montgomery and 96 additional pages of his notes which record additions to the famous text.
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Prince Edward Island on November 30, 1874 and was inspired by her childhood home in the town of Cavendish for the setting of the novel.
Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gableswhich tells the adventures of an 11-year-old orphan, attracts thousands of tourists to the island every year.
The only other Maritime entry in the memory book is court documents from the Nova Scotia trial of Viola Desmonda businesswoman and civil rights activist who was arrested in 1946 for sitting in a section reserved for whites
of a cinema hall.
