In a hospital room, death is about to take away this very old mother who was never really one. Her son, the author and narrator, takes her hand one last time, she is going to die and yet he feels nothing, “neither love, nor tenderness, nor compassion, nor pity, nor empathy”. Then her story takes us into the life of this mother whose first name we will not know… In the 1940s in Algiers, she is a child spoiled by her rich father. Her marriage will be her downfall, she dreamed of the beautiful and high life in Paris, there she encounters only disillusionment. The birth of his son further increases his bitterness. Egotic, excessively narcissistic, the young mother sees herself downgraded, her musician husband does not make her the princess she was for her father. Divorced, she must find another man, richer, more inclined to glorify and satisfy her. More out of necessity than out of desire, she gives life to two other children, she wears his world to the limit, she manipulates and tyrannizes him, bamboozles him while playing the great misunderstood. Until then, her beauty had always saved her day, but now she’s fading, so who else but her big son to spoil her again? Should he not show himself eternally indebted after everything she has done for him! So, with what affection he has left, the son bends over backwards to satisfy this ungrateful and cannibalistic old little girl but of course it will never be enough. A magnificent story which (…)
