“Vannes 39-45, a Breton town in turmoil”… The book, published by Éditions du Grand Blockhaus on the eve of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Vannes, offers a summary of the period which starts from the beginnings of the declaration of war in the aftermath of victory. Under the direction of historians Yves-Marie Evanno, professor of history at Uco, and Olivier Porteau, doctor of history and specialist in paratroopers, sixteen students in the third year of a history degree at the Catholic University of the West South Brittany, examined the local bibliography for almost a year, consulted hundreds of documents in the departmental and municipal archives, before returning their discoveries in writing while respecting the criteria of scientific requirements imposed by this exercise.

Luc and Marc Braeuer, who run the Grand Blockhaus editions, then brought together more than 200 photos, often unpublished, sometimes colorized, of the city under the Occupation.

The result is a “collector’s” book accessible to the general public, organized in six parts and 19 chapters, from general mobilization to the post-war period, including Vannes oppressed, Vannes everyday, Vannes torn apart and Vannes liberated.
