Tennis Tracker: US Open begins, Musetti and Berrettini advance, Nardi and Trevisan out

The Flushing Meadows tournament opens its doors with a series of Italian players currently engaged

00:10 – Lorenzo Musetti also advances to the next round at the US Open, beating the American Reilly Opelka in four sets with a score of 7-6(3) 1-6 6-1 5-7. Incredible in the fourth set when the Italian saves five set points at 4-5, breaks serve, breaks another and closes 7-5.

23:40 – Czech player Jiri Lehecka (22) advanced to the next round at Flushing Meadows. He was leading 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 3-0 before his opponent Marton Fucsovics (32) was forced to retire.

23:20 – Martina Trevisan exits in the first round of the US Open. The Italian tennis player was beaten in two sets by the American Taylor Townsend, with a score of 2-6, 5-7.

23:05 – American Peyton Stearns (22) made a dream start to her home tournament with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (35).

22:30 – Andrey Rublev (26) booked his place in the next round with a three-set 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over Seyboth Wild (24).

22:00 – In the men’s field, Taylor Fritz (26) got off to a perfect start in his US Open debut, winning 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 against Argentine Camilo Carabelli (25).

21:45 – US Open defending champion Coco Gauff (20) made no mistakes in her opening match and was in no mood to joke. She won 6-2, 6-0 against Varvara Gracheva (24) to advance to the next round.

On this frenetic opening day, several other women won in the final minutes, including Anhelina Kalinina (27), Greet Minnen (27) and Paula Badosa (26).

21:11 – Australian Alexei Popyrin (25) beat Soonwoo Kwon (26) 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 and Alexander Bublik (27) lost in five sets against Juncheng Shang (19) with the score of 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

21:05 – World number eight Casper Ruud (25) was in no mood to mess around in his first-round match, winning 7-6 (7-2, 6-2, 6-2) against Yunchaokete Bu (22).

20:50 – No problem for Matteo Berrettini against the other Spanish veteran, Albert Ramos Vinolas. The Roman tennis player wins in three sets with a score of 7-6 (2) 6-2 6-3

20:45 – Veteran Roberto Bautista-Agut (36) reached the second round with a comeback victory 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) against Luca Nardi (21). The Italian tennis player exited in the first round but with his head held high at the US Open, the fourth Slam of the season, fighting from the first to the last point and taking his opponent to a tiebreak in two of the three sets played.

20:20 – Alexander Zverev (27) overcame a small scare against German Maximilian Marterer (29) to earn a place in the next round. Zverev won 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2.

20:15 – Ben Shelton (21), world number 13 and semi-finalist at last year’s US Open, beat former US Open winner Dominic Thiem (30) with a clear 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

19:55 – In the men’s event, 17th seed Ugo Humbert (26) was the first player to secure a place in the second round with a convincing 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (30).

19:50 – Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen (21) held off a combative American Amanda Anisimova (22) to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

19:30 – Elina Svitolina (29) avoided a similar fate to Sakkari despite losing the first set against Argentina’s Maria Carle (24). The Ukrainian fought back and won in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Other players who earned a spot in the second round on the women’s side included talented Russian Erika Andreeva (20), Donna Vekic (28) and Diane Parry (21).

18:25 – The US Open has just started and the top seed has already fallen: Maria Sakkari (29) retired from her opening match against Wang Yafan (30) one set down.

Twelfth seed Daria Kasatkina (27) advances to the second round after beating Jaqueline Cristian (26) 6-4, 6-4.

10:00 – The time has come for the 2024 US Open. The tournament played on the New York hard court opens its doors in the European afternoon today, where at 17:00 Luca Nardi will face the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut. At 18:30, instead, it will be Matteo Berrettini’s turn to challenge the other Iberian Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
