Streets flooded after cloudburst, cars collide with loose manhole covers

A cloudburst above Eindhoven flooded streets and tunnels on Monday evening. Manhole covers rose. The KNMI had already predicted that it could go really bad in the east of the country. Code yellow was in effect in Brabant. That warning was withdrawn around a quarter to nine.

In Eindhoven, 14 millimeters of rain fell, most of it in about 20 minutes. The nuisance caused by the rainwater was very local. In some neighborhoods, hardly a drop fell, in other parts of the city it overflowed. The shower did not linger here for long, according to a spokesperson for Weerplaza. In Maastricht (30 millimeters) and in Vaassen in Gelderland (33 millimeters) there was even more nuisance. “In Gelderland, the showers lingered longer).

Nevertheless, the storm caused a lot of inconvenience in Eindhoven and the surrounding area. A large number of manhole covers came loose. This caused dangerous situations. The manhole covers were not visible everywhere due to the flooding. Cars drove into the covers as a result, causing damage to the bodywork and flat tires. Several cars got stuck under viaducts and in streets that were flooded.

Two cars got stuck in the water on the Eindhovenseweg in Geldrop. The road was closed by the fire department. There were no injuries. The sewer also overflowed in several places. This caused a lot of stench.

There was also a lot of nuisance in Valkenswaard. The entire district between Leenderweg and Vest was affected by the water. Roads were closed off with cars, signs and garbage bins at the initiative of residents. People could barely get in and out of the district. After an hour, most of the water had been drained away, only garbage bins remained on the road on the left and right.

The fire brigade received many reports of water and odor nuisance via the control room, a spokesperson said.
