A goal in each match is enough for AA Gent to advance to the group stage of the Conference League again. For a long time, the bonus from the first leg seemed to be enough against Partizan Belgrade, but in the end Delorge scored the goal of certainty. For AA Gent, it is already the 6th European group stage in a row.

KAA Gent – Partizan Belgrade in a nutshell:

  1. Key moment

When Delorge planted the seal on the ticket for the group stage of the Conference League with a bang in the absolute final, the joy of Ghent exploded. Ghent coach Wouter Vrancken walked onto the field as if he had scored himself. It shows how rewarding and necessary this qualification is for the Buffalos.

  2. Man of the match

Mathias Delorge crowned himself match winner after another excellent match. The young Belgian quickly developed into the most reliable and necessary pawn in the Wouter Vrancken system. If it was 0-0, the honor went to Davy Roef, who kept Gent upright in the mediocre moments of the match.

  3. Remarkable

KAA Gent is a fixture on the European stage. Today, it secured its sixth consecutive participation in the group stage of a European competition. Since 2019-2020, it has had two participations in the Europa League and now four in the Conference League. Just like last year, it struggled through three preliminary rounds. And with 5 wins and one draw, qualification is more than deserved!

Free from fear

How great was the joy of Ghent when Mathias Delorge finally put an end to the lingering uncertainty about KAA Gent’s participation in the group stage of the Conference League.

88 minutes, that’s how long doubts prevailed. Although they diminished with each passing minute.

And yet they could not have been there, because Gent started confidently. Nonchalance defeated Surdez to put the Buffaloes on roses early and Gandelman did not bring the hoped-for luck this time with his fumble attempt.

Despite that better start, Gent could still be happy that it did not go into halftime with a deficit. Early in the first half it thanked Roef who was there for the appointment.

And the best man of the first half, Ghayes Zahid, could not erase the 0 from the scoreboard. With his first attempt he found the foot of Torunarigha, with his second – in front of an empty goal – he shot the ball over.

Delorge brings certainty

Lessons learned and learned. Gent also started the fourth half against Partizan Belgrade quickly with two dangerous headers. Fadiga’s just missed, Gandelman’s exploded on the crossbar.

As the second half progressed and qualification became more certain, the home team’s became more and more fluent. But Gandelman and Surdez just couldn’t exploit their dominance. Scoring remained extremely difficult for the Ghent team in the match.

Then it was up to new Ghent native Delorge who rewarded his strong start to the season in the blue and white colours of Ghent with a shot from the edge of the sixteen.

No more doubts! Gent will be heading to the group stage of a European competition for the sixth consecutive season.

And it is deserved!

Delorge: “There was space and I thought why not…”

Mathias Delorge: “It’s going fast and very well, which is nice. Today the main goal was to qualify and we succeeded. Scoring is always special, no matter when and how. There was space and I thought why not. He flew it in well. I think my dad enjoyed it. I had the feeling that we were better, but the goal didn’t come. And then you feel that the 1-0 was too risky. It wasn’t fear, but there was still a certain nervousness.”

EINDE: KAA Gent 1-0 Partizan Belgrade

Gent joins Union and Club Brugge as the third Belgian team to qualify for the group stage of a European competition. Every minute that passed brought one closer to that certainty. It could have been sealed earlier, but Gandelman’s header hit the crossbar and Fadiga’s header just missed. Gent had learned from the mediocre moment in the first half and combined more smoothly, but had to remain alert to the Serbian counterattacks. In the end, it was Delorge who sealed the ticket to the group stage of the Conference League with a long-range shot in the very end. With five wins and one draw in the preliminary rounds, that is ultimately more than deserved for the Buffalos.

Almost 1-1!

Grimaldo and Kalulu almost ensure an exciting extra time. Grimaldo races down his flank and cuts inside. Roef intervenes well, but the ball hobbles to Kalulu. Who taps it towards goal in a final attempt. Watanabe is in the way and keeps the ball out of the goal.

Mathias Delorge Knieper (KAA Gent) scores. The score is 1 – 0.

There it is, the goal!

Wouter Vrancken walks onto the field as if he scored himself! It is Delorge who secures the certainty for Gent! With a strong long-range shot, where Partizan goalkeeper Jovanovic has no chance.

This means that Gent will qualify for the group stage of the Conference League for the sixth consecutive time! How reassuring!

Another newcomer on the pitch! Hélio Varela also gets his first minutes of play. And Samoise also trots onto the pitch. Fadiga and Surdez have to experience the end of the match from the bench.

Fatigue over!

There’s the goal, we wanted to type. But Fadiga still manages to tap the ball over the goal from very close range. How wonderful the pass from Delorge was, but it is not an assist for the midfielder.

Things can move quickly in football and especially for Torunarigha. From not playing football to the new captain of Gent.

Ghent debutant

Japanese Ito enters the field for captain Sven Kums. It is immediately the debut for the newcomer of Gent. He came over from the Japanese top division and played for the Urawa Reds.

Master tackle from Watanabe

Phew! Watanabe masterfully tackles everything that is sharp in the rapid counterattack of Partizan Belgrade. With a precise through pass Jovanovic was played in, Watanabe rushed back and threw himself in front of the shot. Wonderful defensive work of art by the Japanese!

Staying sharp remains the message for the Buffalos. On a corner kick it is Dorde Jovanovic who can nod to goal. No problem for Davy Roef.
