The Fabulous World of Charles Leclerc

Growing up in Monte Carlo, as a child Charles Leclerc watched the Grand Prix while eating ice cream, it was his perfect moment. Now those passions have turned into work. Both. At 26, the Ferrari driver triumphed at home this year in the Monaco GP, the Formula 1 circuit par excellence, shrouded in an aura of charm as much as that of Monza, renamed for the occasion Monte Charles.

Shortly before, Leclerc had reached another milestone by launching the LEC ice cream line, which combines fitness and gluttony, eliminating feelings of guilt, thanks to its reduced calorie content: at least 30% of the average (about 150 calories per 100 grams). Attention to nutrition and training is a daily discipline for drivers, but the idea would have remained just that if he had not spoken about it over lunch with Federico Grom, architect of the rebirth of artisanal ice cream with his partner Guido Martinetti (their famous chain was later sold to Unilever in a millionaire agreement). The two provided the hardware to the company of which his agent, Nicolas Todt, son of former FIA president Jean, and agent of sports stars, is a part.

The name is onomatopoeic but, apart from recalling the gesture of eating an ice cream cone, it is a tribute to the races of the past when race times were reported with the first three initials of the driver’s surname, as Leclerc said at the Milan preview, pausing for a few digressions on his passions with Gentleman. Before giving himself over, always smiling and affable, to the hundreds of adoring fans who, waiting for him for hours, had peacefully invaded the whole of via Solferino.

1. Ice cream

Vanilla flavor and strictly in a cup. It’s been my passion since I was a child watching the Grand Prix with an ice cream. Now that Formula 1 is my life, I can indulge in less of it, like with pizza, because for a driver, weight control is essential. So, I still eat it, but I hold back. Hence the idea of a quality ice cream but with little fat, sugar and calories.

2. Kimi Räikkönen

If I think of a driver who was a point of reference I would say Kimi. He was the one I looked up to as a child when I dreamed of driving in Formula 1 one day. I liked his simplicity, there were no filters, he showed himself for what he was and this fascinated me. I had confirmation of this later, when we crossed paths, while he was still racing.

3. The people

I have always loved meeting new people, in different environments and contexts, because I believe it opens the mind so much. I really enjoy spending time with the people who are dearest and closest to me and it is an important thing especially in this moment of my life in which it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between those who truly love me and those who, instead, are close to me only out of interest. But I like spending time in good company.

4. Leo

He is my first dog. We have had three in the family, but Leo is the first one I have full responsibility for. He is the brother of the dog that a friend had taken in, the only one missing from the litter to find a home. And so with my girlfriend we decided to take this step and I am more than happy about it!

5. Travel

I do it a lot for work, but I also enjoy it a lot. The places I like the most away from home are Canada, Mexico, Australia and Italy which has always had a special place in my heart: I have always loved the people, the food and the simplicity of life which I like so much. This is my top four, but of course not in this precise order.

6. Monaco

It’s the place I consider home. It’s where I was born and raised, it’s where all my family and friends are, and it’s where I spend all my time when I’m not working, to relax and maybe do a movie marathon, rewatching The Hangover or Harry Potter, two series that I always enjoy rewatching.

7. The jewels

I don’t have a lucky charm, I’m not superstitious and I don’t have any particular rituals, I’ve always tried to avoid it because I think it can end up conditioning you. But I’ve always had a passion for jewelry that I like to match with the watch, like these tennis bracelets in various colors that I often wear. I like fashion, architecture, design, creativity and I enjoy finding accessories that go well with my clothing and how I feel that day. Plus, they’re from a Monaco brand, APM, and this makes me particularly proud to wear them.
