Maxime Carabin wins the first gold medal for the Belgian delegation in Paris

The athlete from Soumagne won in 55.10. He had clocked 54.48 in the morning during the heats, a new Paralympic record. The world record holder (52.00) had improved by 91/100ths the previous mark held by Tomoki Sato since the Tokyo Games three years ago.

In the final, Carabin came well ahead of the Japanese Tomoki Sato (56.26), precisely, in silver, and Tomoya Ito (1:01.08), in bronze.

Maxime Carabin is the reigning world champion in the 100m, 400m and 1,500m in the T52 class since his victory in Kobe, Japan, last May. He had already won the world crown in the 100m and 400m in 2023 in Paris.

The Soumagnard is taking part in his first Paralympic Games, and he also plans to compete in the 100m. The heats will take place on Thursday, September 5 at 9:01 p.m., with the final the following day at 11:33 a.m.

Maxime Carabin lost the use of his legs and part of his left arm during a handball match in November 2019.

Class T52 is a wheelchair athletics class for athletes with very limited movement of the trunk and legs, and mild to moderate limitation of one arm and shoulders.
