CIt took 44 years.” In a tweet accompanied by a photo of Pedro Almodóvar clutching his Golden Lion in his hands, Agustín Almodóvar – the Spanish director’s younger brother and producer – summed up how much this major prize was anticipated.

A rewarding career beyond film

A Golden Lion, Pedro Almodóvar actually already had one on his shelf, since he received a Golden Lion for career achievement in 2019. He spoke at the time of an “act of poetic justice”. Because if he had returned to the Mostra in 1988 for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdownhe then became a regular guest at the Cannes Film Festival, before returning to the Lido with his films: in 2020 with The human voice, his first short film in English (already starring Tilda Swinton), and in 2021 for Parallel motherswhich earned Penélope Cruz a Volpi Cup.
