Local boxer Fillipus Nghitumbwa, who suffered his first career loss in Asia, is eager to right his wrongs in the upcoming bout against Japan’s Yukinori
Oguni. The fight will take place on 13 October in Yokohama, Japan where they will battle it out in the International Super Bantamweight eigh- round fight.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday at the ministry of sport in the capital, Nestor Tobias, who serves as both promoter and trainer, expressed his excitement about the opportunity for his boxer to showcase his talent.
He acknowledged that their previous trip to Asia did not end well, but believes this fight offers them a chance to redeem themselves against Asian opponents. “It’s going to be a huge fight, on a bigger and better stage. We’ve been training in the gym since his last fight against Dekang Wang of China in April this year.
Nghitumbwa is in great shape, and Namibian boxers are known for their skill, so we don’t have any concerns,” Tobias stated.
“This is an important fight, and if he wins, he’ll be in a better position to challenge for the world title, which has been our goal all along. I believe this is the perfect opportunity for us to correct the mistakes we made during our last trip there,” he added.
Nghitumbwa, who boasts a record of 16 fights, 14 wins and two losses, and who will be facing Oguni, a boxer who holds an impressive record of 26 fights, 22 wins, two draws and two losses, acknowledged his opponent’s abilities, but remains confident in his own preparations.
“I have watched a few videos of this guy fighting, and I would say that he is a good boxer. My job is to go out there and get the win. I’m looking forward to the fight,” he said.
“I want to thank my promoters for making this possible, and keeping me in the gym. This is an opportunity I’m going to seize with both hands to correct what went wrong last time I fought there,” he added. – [email protected]
