This meeting in the United Kingdom welcomes the return to competition of Remco Evenepoel, a month after his two Olympic titles a month ago in Paris. The young Belgian, 24 years old, golden helmet, showed himself at the front of the pack chasing after several escapees of the day. Evenepoel will also have worked for the sprint train of his teammate Paul Magnier who wears the first leader’s jersey in the general classification.

Three riders had made up the first breakaway of the Tour with the Dane Julius Johansen (Sabgal/Anicolor), the South African Callum Ormiston (Global 6 United) and the Briton Callum Thornley (Trinity Racing) who was dropped 68 km from the finish. Johansen was the last to stay in front before a regroup 25 km from the finish.

This 20th edition of the Tour of Britain has six stages on its programme and ends on Sunday.

The second stage on Wednesday also features a rather hilly route over 152.1km between Darlington, in the north-east of England, and Redcar, a seaside town in North Yorkshire.

Wout van Aert has won two of the last three editions, last year and in 2021.
