Wout van Aert has been very active in the past few days in collecting mountain points, which means he is now also in the lead in the mountain classification, but does he want to defend the jersey today? In the fifteenth stage to Cuitu Negru there are again a lot of points to be collected.

Today, the riders will face one climb of third, two climbs of first and one climb of the hors categorie. There are a maximum of 43 mountain points up for grabs. At the top of the final climb, the one to Cuitu Negru, no less than twenty points will be awarded to the stage winner. The 19.5 kilometre long final climb is the Cima Alberto Fernández, the roof of this Tour of Spain.

“Most points can be gained on the final climb. So that’s what I’m going for. No, just kidding,” Van Aert was in a good mood at the start. “It’s a super tough ride and I’ve already given a lot this week. It will come down to my legs whether I join a breakaway or not,” he told The Latest News.

“And even in the breakaway there will probably be lighter riders who can handle those steep percentages better. So a good result is absolutely not a goal. The gear choices? It’s just a matter of getting to the top. There are no good gears for that.”
