Saturday we could still enjoy a lovely summer day, with sun and 29 degrees, but Monday that summer seems to have been forgotten. A day full of rain awaits and we won’t reach 20 degrees.

We couldn’t complain about the weekend: Saturday we had a lot of sun and temperatures up to 29 degrees. In the evening it rained heavily in some places, but Sunday was also sunny. Unfortunately, that will change from Monday, says weatherman David Dehenauw.

“Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will have periods of rain and showers. And it will be a lot cooler. On Wednesday and Thursday the maximum temperatures will drop to around 14 degrees, about half of what we had on Saturday. And it will also be a lot colder at night: the mercury will drop to around six degrees. And we will feel that.”

Especially in the north of the country and on the relief, the precipitation can increase in intensity on Monday and be accompanied by a clap of thunder, according to the website of the KMI. “The maxima will vary between 14 and 21 degrees. Locally, gusts of wind around 50 kilometers per hour are possible.” Tuesday will initially be dry and fairly sunny, but rain is also expected with maxima between 14 and 18 degrees.

Dehenauw does not want to say whether summer is already over. “Let’s say that the weather is in a dip. But we have seen examples in the past where it was still 20 to 25 degrees in October or even early November. That was the case in 2014, among others. The suddenly much lower temperatures this week certainly do not mean that summer is over and autumn has already begun.”

Late summer

A pleasant late summer is certainly still possible. But first we have to get through the coming week. An umbrella and raincoat will certainly come in handy.

“But by the weekend it will be a lot better again and the mercury will rise again towards 20 degrees, which is the normal average maximum temperature for September. The chance of precipitation will also decrease considerably. The week after, the flow seems to become northeasterly, which will bring dry continental air to our regions. As a result, the mercury will rise again to maximums around 21 degrees in the center, normal temperatures for September.” An Indian summer remains possible, but it will not be this week or next week.
