The firefighters were called at “6:39 am for a serious road traffic accident, a frontal shock between two light cars” on a national road at a roundabout, according to the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) in Guadeloupe.
According to firefighters, the victims deceased are a “20 -year -old woman” and “four men” aged about twenty years “, who were all in the same vehicle, while a man who was traveling on another car was” seriously injured “in the shock and transported to the hospital.
The five deceased young people “occupied a first vehicle” and the serious injuries is “the driver of the second vehicle,” said Captain Davy Mendès, assistant to the company commander of the Pointe-à-Pitre gendarmerie, present at the scene of the accident.
“Some identities remain to be confirmed,” he told AFP.
“An investigation is open to search for the causes of the accident, entrusted to the Baie-Mahault brigade”, according to the same source.
The mayors of Baie-Mahault and Lamentin, where the deceased victims resided, went there.
“It is difficult, they are families that I know very well, young people in the age of age,” said the mayor of Lamentin, Jocelyn Sapotille, on RCI Guadeloupe (Radio Caraïbes International).
