US President Donald Trump received Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, who made his first visit to the United States after his legislative elections.
This long-awaited meeting comes against the backdrop of tensions between the two neighboring North American countries following the taxation by President Trump of customs duties of 25% on several Canadian products, as well as his recurring call to make Canada the 51st US State.
The interview, held in the presence of several members of the US administration, including Vice-President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, took place in a very cordial and respectful atmosphere.
Asked about his intention to annex Canada, Trump stressed that the annexation question “is not in the agenda (…) although it would be a wonderful marriage”.
“But you should never say. Many things in the past impossible have become feasible,” he nuanced in an amused tone.
For its part, the Canadian PM stressed that “Canada is not for sale, and will never be”, adding that “the opportunity is in partnership as we have done in the past”.
In this regard, Carney mainly insisted on military cooperation. “My government has committed to bringing a radical change to Canadian security,” he said.
Referring to trade between the two countries, Carney recalled that Canada is “the biggest customer in the United States”, indicating that “50% of cars that are sold in Canada come from the United States”.
The meeting marked a change in tone very noticed from President Trump, who said he had “a lot of respect” for the Canadian leader.
He also praised Carney’s victory in the legislative elections of April 28. “I want to congratulate him. He probably made one of the greatest feedback in political history. Perhaps even bigger than mine,” said Trump.
