In a context marked by the growing precariousness of press companies, public aid and support funds for the economic viability of the media is increasingly debating. Intended in my opinion to promote the restructuring, modernization and financial stability of the press bodies, these funds are, in many cases used against employment not to speak of a misappropriation of objectives. In place of a sustainable transformation strategy, they often serve to clog social breaches, under the direct pressure of press unions.
The situation of information workers is undoubtedly alarming; Unpaid wages, precarious contracts, threats of dismissal … Faced with this distress, the unions go up to the niche to demand immediate regularizations. Their fight is certainly very legitimate but however, by demanding that the funds received be directly assigned to the payment of suffering wages, they sometimes push the leaders of press companies to sacrifice the long -term vision on the altar of emergency.
Instead of rethinking economic models, investing in modern tools, training human resources or diversifying sources of income, funds are absorbed by the current management of internal crises. A temporary solution, which does not solve anything in depth and prevents the press from leaving its spiral of dependence and fragility.
It is time to establish a new dynamic of dialogue between unions, press patterns and regulatory authorities. A dialogue based on lucidity and shared responsibility. It is possible and necessary to think of a balanced use of resources by affecting an share of immediate social obligations, while preserving a margin for structural investments because without deep reform, press companies will remain card castles, always on the verge of collapse. And the jobs that we try to save today will be irreparably lost tomorrow. It is the future of the press, but also of democracy.
