100 liters of rain within two hours: For many vacationers on Lanzarote, summer recreation becomes a nightmare within a few days.
Heavy rains have hit the popular Canarian holiday island of Lanzarote. On Saturday, just under 100 liters of rain per square meter in some places – with devastating consequences: streets were washed out, cars were carried away by the floods, pedestrian zones flooded. Where holidaymakers have recently been broken on hotels, water and mud now determine the scenery.
According to the head of the regional government’s disaster protection, Enrique Espinosa, 300 emergency calls, many of them from the island capital Arrecife and the teguise further north: “Some houses are flooded, and what is left is a large amount of mud,” he told the state television station RTVE on Sunday.
The situation is currently particularly dramatic in the island capital Arrecife. According to the “Fuerteventura Zeitung”, the disaster case should be proclaimed as soon as possible. The mayor assured those affected: in particular, business people have lost their entire belongings. You should be helped quickly.
Lanzarote is considered one of the most popular Canary Islands – it is located in the northeast of the archipelago. Around three million tourists visit the island every year.
