US officials insist on the urgency of reaching a peace agreement in the Ukrainian conflict. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the coming week was crucial for negotiations, the Trump administration pressure on Russia and Ukraine to find common ground.
Although the United States has refrained from imposing sanctions on Russia to allow diplomacy to progress, Rubio warned that President Trump had alternative measures in the event that one of the parties hinders the conclusion of a peace agreement. He expressed his preference for diplomatic solutions rather than using such measures.
Evaluate the role of the mediator
The Trump administration intends to assess its mediator role this week and decide whether to continue to get involved or focus on other priorities. Rubio recognized that there were both reasons to be optimistic and realistic as to the possibility of achieving a resolution of the conflict triggered by the invasion of Russia in February 2022. He stressed that a purely military solution was not viable.
Development of peace talks
Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed hope that current meetings could lead to a historic peace agreement. A White House spokesperson called “very productive” discussions. In addition, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz confirmed that the United States and Ukraine were about to conclude an agreement concerning the minerals of rare land, negotiations having continued during the weekend. He also revealed that discussions on territorial issues were underway between Moscow and kyiv, but did not provide other details.
