Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping signed a joint declaration on Thursday aimed at deepening the global strategic partnership between their two countries.
This document was adopted after bilateral discussions in Moscow, where Xi arrived the day before for a four -day visit, on the occasion of the annual military parade on the Red Square scheduled for May 9, marking the 80th anniversary of the victory Day.
Celebrated every May 9 in Russia and in several former Soviet republics, the day of victory commemorates the victory of the USSR over Nazi Germany during the Second World War, known in Russia under the name of Great Patriotic War.
At a press conference at the Kremlin after the signature ceremony – during which a second joint declaration on global strategic stability was also adopted – Putin qualified her exchanges with XI “very constructive and fruitful”.
He stressed that bilateral relations between Moscow and Beijing had reached their “highest historical level”, adding that they were “self -sufficient” and “independent of internal political factors or international dynamics”.
The Russian president also said that almost all trade between the two countries is now carried out in their respective national currencies. According to him, Moscow and Beijing have set up a “stable” mutual trade system and “solidly protected from external interference and global markets”.
Putin also recalled that Russia and China had undergone the heaviest human losses during the Second World War. He insisted on the importance, for the two countries, to defend together “the historical truth” on their common victory, which he considers as “a universal value for humanity”.
For its part, Xi Jinping called for strengthening mutual political trust as well as intensifying strategic cooperation between Beijing and Moscow, insisting on the need to remain reliable partners “in a spirit of mutual benefit and common prosperity”.
He estimated that China and Russia must continue to play a role of “stabilizing, positive and progressive factors” on the international scene, adding that the two countries will be able to “face all storms and overcome all obstacles together”.
