Ramzan Kadyrov is one of the most dreaded leaders in the Russian Federation. Under its reign, Chechnya has become sadly famous for its forced disappearances, acts of torture and its executions. The West, notably the United States, imposed sanctions on Kadyrov and his family for multiple human rights violations.

According to Russian independent media Novaya Gazeta Europe, Kadyrov’s state of health has deteriorated strongly. He would suffer from pancreatic necrosis, a serious illness, and would have already designated his minor son, Adam, as a successor.
This is not the first time that Kadyrov has been talking about a resignation. He had already made similar requests in 2016, 2017 and 2022, but so far, none had been accepted by Moscow. It remains to be seen whether this time Vladimir Putin will validate his withdrawal.
