French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the president of the Palestinian authority, Mahmoud Abbas, addressed the release of the hostages, the return to a cease-fire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, during an interview this Monday.
In a publication on the social network X, Macron assures that “France is fully mobilized to obtain the release of the hostages, the return of a cease-fire and immediate access to humanitarian aid to Gaza”.
“It is essential to build a framework for the day after: disarm Hamas, define credible governance and reform the Palestinian authority,” he continued, considering that “this must make it possible to advance towards the political solution to two states, in the perspective of the June conference. In the service of peace and security of all ”.
And to conclude: “We need peace”.
This exchange comes when Emmanuel Macron announced, in an interview broadcast on Wednesday on France 5 on Wednesday, that he planned to recognize the Palestinian state at the conference to be held in New York next June.
“We have to go towards recognition and therefore, in the coming months, we will go,” he had pleaded the day after a two-day state visit to Cairo, where he was received by his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi.
He also indicated that the objective was to be able to “finalize this movement of mutual recognition by several” and then considered that this “collective dynamic” should “also allow those who defend Palestine, to recognize in turn Israel, which many of them do not do, and to be clear to fight against those who deny Israel to exist, which is the case of Iran”.
As early as 2024, the French president had assured that “the recognition of a Palestinian state is not a taboo for France”, specifying that this is what is due “to the Palestinians whose aspirations have been trampled for too long”.
To date, 147 of the 193 UN countries recognize Palestine. Several countries formalized their recognition in the course of 2024, including Norway, Spain and Ireland.
