The of the Niger and the heavy rains caused serious floods across the country between September and December 2024. Since then, the victims of the North hesitate to return home, while those of the center have already started the reconstruction of their house. In Mopti, local authorities ensure that measures are planned to the damage this year.

In the north of the country, the return of certain victims of the 2024 floods to their usual residence is not on the agenda. In Diré and Gao, some of them deplore the lack of conditions to return. Meanwhile, in Mopti, others are hard at for the reconstruction of their former homes before the of the winter season.

“Since our houses fell during the floods, it is on the sand dunes that we live and under tents. We for help to be able to return to our residences ”says a disaster victim. “Me, I intend to undo my box to go and next to my brother who is in a place better secure than ours”advocates another. “I am in the process of rebuilding my house with cement to be able to spend the winter season well”said the third speaker.

Authorities on foot to prevent any floods

In addition, the mayor of the urban commune of Mopti, Issa Kansaye reassures that arrangements are underway in the city. This is to minimize the damage of a possible flood.

“The tenor’s cleaning work to prevent floods and others are underway”, according to the mayor. “We are going to request the Regional Directorate of Roads and also of sanitation. We make all the measures to avoid floods ”, he added.

It should be remembered that nearly 100 deaths, 150 injured and several thousand hectares of fields were swept away by waters everywhere through Mali during the floods of 2024, according to the Interministerial Committee for the Management of Crises and Catastrophes.
