Microsoft deletes authenticator features to encourage users to use Edge

Microsoft has announced that it would delete the possibility of saving and using passwords via the Authenticator application by 2025. A clear decision that will the way many users manage access to their accounts, and which will come into force soon.

– From June 2025, it will no longer be possible to record passwords in Authenticator.
– In July 2025, the application will lose the semi-automatic function.
– By August 2025, all the previously recorded passwords will no longer be accessible.

According to the company, identification information is already synchronized with Microsoft Edge, which will become the new HUB for password management and two -factor authentication. To continue using your recorded identification information, you will have to go to the Edge browser and use its integrated password manager. Important note: the two -fact verification part with QR code will continue to operate normally in Microsoft Authenticator, which is actually demoted to a direct competitor of Google Authenticator. The change affects only the registration functions of the password and semi-automatic entry.

On paper, Microsoft talks about a choice aimed at simplifying password management between devices. In practice, however, it is not difficult to see an obligation to use Edge, even for those who have never used it otherwise. Authenticator was appreciated precisely because it made it possible to separate the management of the passwords from the browser, making the experience more rationalized and targeted. You will now need to install Edge on each device, connect with your Microsoft account and use the password manager integrated into the browser. In other , there is no new independent application project for those who wish to manage passwords without going through Edge, forcing users’ hands, who will have to choose between installing the Microsoft browser everywhere or changing the password manager.
