The Confederation intends to use more exercise places or civil aerodromes for military purposes more. The Epeisses site, in Avully in the canton of Geneva, is concerned. The inhabitants fear seeing helicopters of the army crisscrossing the sky above their village.
In an unstable geopolitical context, the army wants to decentralize its means and list its landings for helicopters. This implies a change in status of the place of Epeisses exercises. It would be classified as a regularly used heliport. The inhabitants fear a more regular back and forth, while they are already tired by the noise of the Airports Airport aircraft.
“Suddenly, you have apocalypse now ‘who passes you over the head,” illustrates Sylvain Fuser, municipal councilor in Avully, interviewed on Monday in 12:45. “Once the decision is made and the plan approved, there is no possible reverse,” he added, adding that the decision is valid “for 10 years minimum”. More than 400 inhabitants have signed petitions to oppose the army plan.
Mayor’s concern
Several districts of housing are directly affected by these noise pollution. Mayor of Avully, Vincent Mottet points to a contradiction: on the one hand, “we say to be more oriented on environmental protection, speed limitation, 30 km/h, less noise, light” and on the other hand, “we are imposed on helicopter movements, additional noise”, he deplores.
The municipality wishes more dialogue on the part of the army. Contacted, the Federal Department of Defense, Protection of Population and Sports (DDPS) indicates that it has recorded an average of 100 flight movements per year between 2018 and 2023. It claims that the current situation will not change and that a maximum framework for use will be fixed.
The noise pollution will be calculated. The authorities and the population may express themselves on this subject in the context of a new consultation and participation procedure
“The noise pollution will be calculated. The authorities and the population will be able to express themselves on this subject in the context of a new consultation and participation procedure,” said the DDPS. The cantons and the municipalities had until the end of April to send their positions, which will be subject to the Federal Council for approval.
