The Senegalese Parliament, in which the ruling party holds the majority, voted Thursday evening the referral to the High Court of Justice of five ministers of the regime of former President Macky Sall to be tried for corruption.
Persons accused of corruption in the management of the Coronavirus Fund are: Mansour Faye, Ismael Madior Fall, Moustapha Diop, Aistou Sophie Gladima and Salimata Diop, investigations having revealed corruption in billions of francs.
Parliament had previously voted the lifting of parliamentary immunity from Moustapha Diop and Salimata Diop.
The accusations brought against former civil servants concern in particular inflated invoices relating to the supply of rice to help the Senegalese to face the repercussions of the virus, in the case of the former Minister of Development Mansour Faye.
Moustapha Diop and Salimata Diop are accused of having illegally perceived commissions.
Ismaƫl Madior Fall, former Minister of Justice, is accused of demanding that the entrepreneur who built the Guedeway courthouse in the suburbs of Dakar, a commission of 250 million francs.
During a recent appearance in the media, Fall denied the accusation, admitting that the entrepreneur had offered him 50 million francs within the framework of the project, but that he had diplomatically declined the offer.
Senegalese law designates the High Court of Justice as the only body empowered to pursue ministers for acts related to the exercise of their ministerial functions.
Immediately after his adoption, the President of the National Assembly will transmit the decision to the public prosecutor, who will inform the President of the High Court of Justice and the Commission of Inquiry.
