An interdepartmental advice on the preparation of Tabaski and the fight against the flight of cattle was held this Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at administrative building. At the end of this meeting, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko listed several measures intended to guarantee an optimal market supply.
The meeting made it possible to take stock. The measures implemented by the government the previous year have contributed to ensuring an adequate supply of the sheep market, thanks to the mobilization of the national offer and import from neighboring countries, notably Mali and Mauritania. However, certain structural challenges persist, such as insufficient spaces for the point of sale of sheep, in particular in the Dakar region, the anarchic installation of points of sale, delays in the implementation and reimbursement of credits for the operation, as well as the high cost of food for cattle.
Following these observations, the Head of government has made several recommendations. “The Minister of the Armed Forces and the Minister of the Interior and Public Security must ensure the safety of persons and property throughout the chain of delivery and marketing of sheep, in particular on the crossing points, conveyor axes, waiting areas, and points of sale. It is also necessary to facilitate the circulation of vehicles carrying sheep to the markets, in particular by allowing each truck or wagon to have on board three shepherds responsible for monitoring the sheep, “he said.
The Prime Minister also asked the ministers concerned, in collaboration with the local authorities, to take the necessary measures to develop authorized points of sale. This includes studying the option of developing a cattle park on a large area in Diamniadio-Thiès, decluttering and cleaning of sites before, during and after the Tabaski party, lighting of sales points, the opening of temporary water points and the installation of management committees in all authorized points of sale.
The Head of Government also instructed the Minister of Health and Social Action to take the necessary measures for the health surveillance of livestock in Senegal, throughout the roads, waiting areas and points of sale. “The Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Breeding will transmit, at the latest on July 31, 2025, a balance sheet report on the progress of the supply and sale of sheep operations, in coordination with all stakeholders,” added Ousmane Sonko. He also asked for the development of an action plan aimed at achieving Senegal self -sufficiency in the production of sheep for Tabaski as soon as possible.
