According to a seismic alert bulletin issued by the national surveillance and seismic alert network, the shock was located at a latitude of 30,970 ° N and a longitude of 8.296 ° W, at a depth of 11 kilometers.
It was of such intensity that it sowed panic among the inhabitants of the Marrakech-Safi region, especially in the province of El Haouz, still marked by the earthquake of September 2023.
Contacted by us, the director of the National Institute of Geophysics, Nasser Jebbour, indicated that this shock is normal and is part of the series of post-secondary aftershocks, specifying that it was felt in the neighboring provinces of Chichaoua, Taroudant, Ouarzazate and Azilal.
Its particularity lies however in its timing: this is a late replica compared to the main shock which occurred in September 2023. In addition, this jerk is relatively strong, which makes it a rare replica compared to the usual replicas, generally not felt, specifies the manager.
He explains that the major earthquake of 2023 had destabilized the high atlas chain, causing a series of aftershocks, some of which can be more perceptible.
The official also reassured the downward trend of shaking in the region, while highlighting the possibility of other replicas, less strong than that recorded on Tuesday.
Nasser Jebbour also specified that no call received by the National Institute of Geophysics was reporting after this jolt, inviting residents to remain serene, such replicas being mainly rare.
According to him, these tremors must be seen as a reminder of the importance of building well and integrating seismic risk into development and development policies.
