After an official return to Europe in 2024, Fortnite should also make a comeback on iPhone in the rest of the world. But to achieve this, Epic Games will rush to circumvent the Apple limitations.
Indeed, The return of the game (and the arrival of the Epic Games Store Mobile) is legal in Europe, Thanks to DMA. Apple therefore had no choice but to comply with European legislation. But in the rest of the world, the situation is slightly different. So far, Apple had the right to block applications that returned users outside the App Store to subscribe to a subscription. It is for this reason that at the time, Fortnite had disappeared from the apple brand application shop.
But recently Apple has lost a significant legal battle in the United States. The company must authorize these subscriptions outside the App Store, and developers can now communicate within their application that it is entirely possible for users to subscribe via an external site, which avoids paying 30% of the price of the Apple subscription.
Fortnite therefore no longer has any reasons to do without the App Store, and can make a comeback all over the world. Except that, for the moment, Apple has still not reactivated the developer account of Epic Games, necessary to publish an application on the App Store.
Never mind, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, found a solution. To offer the game to players from around the world, Epic will use a Sweden -based developer account, and created last year to relaunch Fortnite in Europe. This developer account is not the “main” account of Epic Games, but it has the advantage of not being blocked by Apple. It should allow the company to publish Fortnite again on the App Store, and redirect the players to the Epic site for any in-game purchase.
Note that the Epic Games plan could be stopped by Apple, which called on the recent legal decision. But while waiting for a possible reversal of the situation, the cunning of Epic Games may well work.
