The rescue teams found “the bodies of a woman and her son, both of Belgian nationality, who had been missing after floods in the Choubak region, about 200 km south of Amman,” said the French AFP press agency, citing a statement from the Directorate of General Security.
According to declarations by the governor of Maan, Hassan Al-Jabour, reported by the official television channel Al-Mamlaka, the Belgian and her three children were part of a group of tourists also including 14 Czechs in “adventure trip” on Sunday, without a guide. The authorities have managed to evacuate the majority of the group, but the Belgian and her three children have disappeared, he added. The rescue teams found two of the children in “good health”.
“We deplore the death of two compatriots. We follow the file closely, in collaboration with our embassy in Amman,” said the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Since these are individual cases, we cannot provide further information.”
About thirty kilometers from the city of Choubak, the ancient city of Petra had to be evacuated Sunday after the UNESCO World Heritage Site was affected by sudden floods in the region. Nearly 1,800 tourists then left the monumental temples cut in the rock. No victim has been reported, according to a local official, Yazan Mohadin.
