(Ecofin agency) – Morocco is one of the African countries where cannabis can be used for medical and industrial purposes. After the legalization of the plant in 2021, the country which started exports in 2023 continues its progress on the international market.
In Morocco, the Cannaflex company sent a cargo of cannabis on Thursday, April 10 for therapeutic use from the local variety “Beldia”, intended for specialized pharmaceutical laboratories in Europe and Africa. In a press release published on its site, the company specifies that this is the first export of this variety operated by the Moroccan industry.
Unlike imported seeds which are only cultivated in the irrigated system, the “Beldia” is a local variety which can prosper with a minimum irrigation effort, according to the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis (ANRAC) activities. This feature makes a sustainable option for small producers, allowing them to reduce the costs related to irrigation while preserving local water resources.
Although the volume of exported cargo has not been revealed, this announcement confirms the development of local industry since the decriminalization of the sector in 2021. It also marks the desire for the Moroccan industry to capture more shares on a global growing market.
According to the projections formulated on the Statita platform, the size of the global medical cannabis market should reach $ 21 billion in 2025 and display an average growth of 1.65 % per year until 2029. The prospects for Moroccan industry are promising, especially since local production is called to grow more in the coming years.
Indeed, after a modest harvest of 294 tonnes in 2023, the Moroccan production of legal cannabis has more than tenfold, reaching 4,082.4 tonnes in 2024, according to the Anrac. And this thanks to the concerted efforts to restructure it, especially in the provinces of Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen and Taounate, which are the main production areas.
For the 2025 campaign, the ANRAC intends to intensify its efforts to consolidate the progress already carried out and support the initiatives necessary to improve performance.
