New turnaround in the White House. Donald Trump has changed his mind again – even if he claims the opposite. Now, the American president reaches out to car manufacturers.
At the end of March, Donald Trump announced new customs duties: +25% for products imported from Europe in particular. A decision that had upset the economic world and in particular the automotive sector. A new tax applied from April 2 and then … withdrawn. Faced with the European Union response, the American billionaire had turned around.
New flip-flop by Donald Trump
A 90 -day break is now established. Part of the world can blow and the automotive sector may be a little more than the others. In recent hours, the American president said this: “I study a solution to help certain car manufacturers”, as reported by the United States news agency, Associated Press.
Donald Trump supported his thought. The manufacturers “need a little time, because they will make them here, but they need a little time. This is the kind of thing I offer.” Before promising: “I don’t change my mind, but I’m flexible.”
A decision that comes too late
An awareness which has the merit of existing but which already intervenes too late according to Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, an association representing Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
“There is an increasing awareness that important customs tariffs on spare parts could compromise our common goal of building an American automotive industry prosperous and growing, and that many of these supply chain transitions will take time.”
