Éric Coquerel, deputy LFI of Seine-Saint-Denis and president of the finance committee in the National Assembly, was the guest of the 4 truths on Wednesday, May 1.
May 1 is one day unemployed for many employees in France. However, a bill for the opening of bakeries on the day of the Labor Day is on the table. It would allow the bosses to make employees work on the basis of volunteer. Éric Coquerel does not want a measure going in this direction to the day: “We are talking about May 1 at the moment which is the International Workers’ Day – it is not the Labor Day – but the feast of the rights of the workers”, comments the LFI deputy.
A nuance that he explains by the fact that May 1 would be a day devoted to the rights of employees: “We are going to talk about the restriction of workers’ rights instead of talking about their claims (…) on May 1 is the day that is sacred for workers, we do not touch it”he adds.
But then, what about employees who propose to work that day, a question that is difficult to arise, according to the deputy: “What is an employee going to do when a boss tells him that he needs him to work that day? It suggests a very consumerist society in which we would all be called upon to work and always produce”insists the president of the finance committee.
