In contrast to previous years, Vlaams Belang does not hold a major meeting on 1 May. The meeting would take place in Ninove this year, but will be deleted. “A May 1 celebration in Ninove, without our mayor Guy D’Haeseleer, is not a real May 1 celebration,” writes party chairman Tom van Grieken on X on Tuesday afternoon. As is known, D’Haeseleer urgently needs a liver transplant.

Vlaams Belang has been holding a May 1 meeting for many years, often in symbolic places such as Vilvoorde following the closure of the Renault factory. This year Ninove, where Vlaams Belang with Guy D’haeseleer has the first mayor because of the great success of Forza Ninove, which achieved the absolute majority.

But D’Haeseleer has been struggling with heavy liver problems since the start of this month. On 3 April he was admitted to the hospital with a “severe and heavy form of hepatitis”, an inflammation of the liver. He needs a liver transplant, but until now no suitable donor has been found.
“A May 1 celebration in Ninove, without our mayor @Guydhaeseleervb, is not a real May 1 celebration. The big meeting is therefore canceled this year,” announced party chairman Tom Van Grieken on X. “We postpone the location and the celebration for a year. We wish Guy all the improvement and keep hoping for a complete recovery!”

Nevertheless, Vlaams Belang will transfer the message from the party on the occasion of the Labor Day on the eve of 1 May, with all the mandataries of the party, but smaller. “We are the syndicate of the hard-working Flemish, the voice of 1 million Flemish people, we are going to give a clear May 1 message on the eve, but indeed smaller, given the situation of Guy,” says Tom Van Grieken.
