Alex Lifeson, the legendary guitarist of Rush, recently shared a privileged moment with Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo de Metallica during an improvised jam session at his home in Toronto. An experience he describes as unforgettable.
A musical encounter as spontaneous as inspiring
In a new interview with Pete Pardo de Sea Of TranquilityAlex Lifeson revealed that he had recently spent an exceptional evening with two members of Metallica. The guitarist said: “Metallica guys were in town last week. I found Kirk [Hammett] and Rob [Trujillo]we went to dinner, then we played together, here, at my place. They passed after the meal and we played for a few hours. It was great. ”
Returning to this JAM session, Lifeson added: “Often, when you play with musicians, you improvise a blues in 12 measures, because everyone can follow. But with musicians as talented as these guys, the places where you can go musically, it’s just incredible. I loved every second. We were over the three of enthusiasm.” It was really special. “
Mutual respect between musicians
This is not the first time that Metallica members have displayed their admiration for Rush. Less than two years earlier, Robert Trujillo had mentioned his admiration for Geddy Lee in the documentary Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too?broadcast on Paramount+. The bass player confided: “I played in ‘garden groups’ at 16, and we took over the Villa Strangiato, Yyz, all these classics of Rush. The more hard it was, the better it was. We probably massacred the songs, but we played them with as much enthusiasm as those of Ozzy, Black Sabbath or Van Halen.”
He added: “Spending time with one of his heroes is surreal. We want to stay humble, treat everyone with respect, but at the same time, we say to ourselves: ‘Damn, it’s Geddy Lee.’”
On April 26, Trujillo and Hammett even interpreted a version of The Strange Villa During the Metallica concert at the Rogers Center de Toronto, thus paying tribute to their musical idols on the scene of their city.
