Video game adaptations to the cinema or in series are generally bad. We might believe that things have improved over time, but think again: we are not doing better than before. The proof with these six recent films from video games.
#1 Doom : Annihilation (2019)
You remember the Doom from 2005 with The Rock? Well, in 2019 was released Doom : Annihilationa film that undoubtedly tried to surf the success of the 2016 game. This new attempt is even worse than the first. We meet here with a sub-farns where there is almost nothing, a shame for such a nervous license. At least, in 2005, we could laugh. Here, even that, it’s impossible.
#2 Assassin’s Creed (2016)
The license Assassin’s Creed is the one that has the most potential in terms of narration, making it particularly suitable for a cinematographic adaptation. The 2016 film seemed to have understood this by situating his intrigue during the Spanish Inquisition. With a five -star cast, we could expect to have a good time. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Although the feature film takes up the concept of games, it is very confused. He also commits the error to devote too much time to the game taking place in the present, a portion generally little appreciated by the players. A great missed opportunity for a work with great potential.
#3 Monster Hunter (2020)
Paul WS Anderson is known to destroy video game licenses. He did it with Resident Eviland there he continues his work with Monster Hunter. The film is aesthetically uninspired, not to say downright ugly. However, with a budget 60 million dollars, we could have expected visual wonder similar to the games, except that this is not the case. The height is that the best scene in the film, the one that best transcribed the atmosphere of the games, was cut at the end to create a Mollasson cliffhanger.
#4 Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
The saga Resident Evil With Milla Jovovich had little to do with the games. This new adaptation is getting closer, but it is just as bad as its predecessors. Merge the first two games in the series to make it a film, while betraying the character of the characters, was clearly not a brilliant idea. As if it were not confused enough, the feature film continues the sub -intrigues without ever concluding them. And even if the film is more faithful to the games, it gives the impression of not understanding it Like the iconic scene of the first zombie in the mansion, emptied of any substance here.
#5 Minecraft (2025)
The film Minecraft is currently indoors and is already breaking records. Its financial success is such that a sequel is already in preparation. To be honest, it would have been better than the feature film is a flop. The film completely misses the essence of the game and delivers an adventure of a distressing banality. We could almost talk about a “Tiktok film”, and the craze around confirms it. And even if it is a work intended for children, its nullity is in no way an excuse, quite the contrary.
#6 Borderlands (2024)
Eli Roth transformed Borderlands in a family film. Just with that, it was obvious that this adaptation went straight into the wall. The license thus went to the Hollywood reel, losing everything that made its specificity. It is very sad that such wacky games are reduced to a sanitized product.
