Morocco chairs the 20th Forum on Forests

The Kingdom of assures the of the 20th session of the Nations Forum on Forests (FNUF), which is held from May 5 to 9, 2025 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

At the helm of this work, Abderrahim Houmy, Managing Director of the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF), proudly carries the voice of Morocco. This edition of the FNUF focuses mainly on the evaluation of advances in the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for the 2017-2030 forests.

The valuation of socio-economic and environmental services from forest ecosystems, the mobilization of innovative funding, strengthening scientific and technical cooperation, as well as improving governance managers in order to ensure forest management respectful of sustainability, are at the heart of debates.

Taking advantage of this global platform, Morocco has presented its vision “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030”, as an integrated and exemplary model of a policy combining economic development, preservation of the environment and resilience of rural populations in the face of the challenges of climate .

During his intervention, Abderrahim Houmy underlined the major contribution of this strategy to sustainable development objectives (SDGs), in particular those related to the fight against poverty, the restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as the promotion of access to clean and renewable energy.

In continuation of his efforts, the official announced the organization, in June 2025 in Agadir, of an international event focused on community management of forests, technological innovation in forestry matters and sustainable financing mechanisms. This meeting, intended to promote the exchange of experiences, the identification of common challenges and the proposal of concrete solutions, is part of the dynamics engaged by Morocco to support the strategic orientations of the forum.

It should also be recalled that, during the renewal in May 2024, Morocco was elected as an representative at the Bureau of the Forum for Biennium 2024-2026, in recognition of the constant commitment of the Kingdom in responsible forest management, consistent with the royal vision of sustainable development. Created in October 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the FNUF plays a key role in the animation of global policies of conservation and sustainable forest use.
