Morocco in the face of the SAF opportunity

With challenges for the‘aviation, in particular with the‘Objective to stay below 2 ° C in terms of global warming, S‘offer airlines, such as the‘sustainable adoption D‘Aviation – Better known under the acronym SAF (Fuels Aviation Sustainable), and can become a leading in the matter.

In a recent study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) devoted to these lasting new fuels, it appears that the capacity of SAF has increased in the past three years, with a sharp increase in 2024, and a trend that should continue in 2025.

In figures, the SAF recorded growth of 1150 % of the supply in three years, despite everything, they represent only 0.3 % of the fuel used worldwide in 2024.

“About half of the business aviation players now spend more than 4 % of their turnover or their budget for investments in SAF”said the study, noting that, however, some segments are of others.

“Project developers and aircraft manufacturers and engines led to the charge, devoting important resources to development”however still too many players are waiting that the market takes off to dare to invest and follow the trend.

However, notes the document, unlike other ultra-competitive sectors, the commercial aviation sector offers a unique opportunity to conduct a transformer through action.

This can be created, according to the study, by an increased adoption of SAF. A virtuous circle can be created “Between supply and demand. A stronger and more foreseeable demand from SAF, anchored in firm purchasing commitments, will encourage project developers and financiers to invest in new facilities, thus increasing supply and progressing production technologies. ”

In addition, the increase in supply will lead to a drop in prices, which will stimulate demand more, adds the analysis, which highly recommends the adoption of SAF, believing that to maintain global warming well below 2 ° C, it will take a collaboration on the scale of the ecosystem.

In this context, Morocco could play a leading role by focusing on these fuels which integrate perfectly into its energy strategy. By being one of the models of renewable energies and focusing on technologies to diversify its energy mix by taking advantage of its climate, the kingdom has considerable assets to continue its momentum and become a leading actor in this dynamic.

His participation could be done in particular through tax incentives aimed at facilitating investments, the creation of public-private partnerships, or facilitating these projects with funding.

It also has considerable advantages, in particular its geographical position at the center of the map, between Africa and , its ambition for the development of green hydrogen, and solid infrastructure.

The study considers that SAF represent an opportunity, and advances certain avenues to develop the own fuel sector for aviation.

Among other things, it suggests federating public and private actors around a roadmap, including by European levels to integrate SAF into their energy mix.

She maintains that the launch of industrial pilot projects could give confidence to investors and airlines, in addition to the creation of an attractive investment environment.
