Morocco chairs the 20th United Nations Forum on Forests in New York and presents its 2020-2030 forest strategy
Morocco assures the presidency of the 20th United Nations Forum on Forests (FNUF) in New York, through Abderrahim Houmy, Managing Director of the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF). This session, organized from May 5 to 9, 2025, focuses on the evaluation of the implementation of the United Nations Strategic Plan for the 2017-2030 forests.
The works relate in particular to the valuation of socio-economic and environmental services of forest ecosystems, mobilization of funding, scientific and technical cooperation, as well as the improvement of governance policies for sustainable forest management.
In this context, Morocco presented its national strategy “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030”, as an integrated and innovative model that meets the global challenges linked to climate change, the erosion of biodiversity and the resilience of rural communities, according to a press release from the ANEF.
During his intervention, Mr. Houmy underlined the contribution of this strategy to sustainable development objectives (SDGs), in particular those relating to the fight against poverty, the restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as transition to clean and lasting energy.
Morocco also announced the organization of an international event next June in Agadir, dedicated to community management of forests, technological innovation and sustainable financing mechanisms, in order to promote the exchange of expertise and strengthen regional and international cooperation.
Elected in May 2024 at the FNUF office for the period 2024-2026 as a representative of Africa, Morocco confirms its leadership and its commitment to the sustainable management of forest resources, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Created by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in October 2000, the United Nations Forum on forests works to promote the management, conservation and sustainable development of all forests on a global scale.
