Lee Miller, the film of a life for Kate Winslet to find this evening on Canal+

Lee Miller Traces the journey of a real war photographer during the Second World War, brillishly embodied by the great Kate Winslet. Alternating between memories of the and scenes taking place in 1977, she entrusted her story to her son, Antony Penrose. The feature film highlights its reports made for Vogue, notably covering the Blitz in London, the Liberation of Paris, as well as the horror of the Buchenwald and Dachau camps. He also addresses the personal and professional that she has gone through, and the way in which war has permanently marked his life.

The film of a life for Kate Winslet?

Kate Winslet, also producer of the film, has been carrying out the project for several years. She invested in body and soul to do justice to this complex character, far from all Hollywood simplification. Shot in particular in Hungary, Croatia and the Kingdom, the feature film experienced an eventful production, marked by the logistical challenges linked to the pandemic of Covid-19, but also by the assertive will to propose an independent film, with a free and without compromise. Behind the objective, Ellen Kuras, operating head of operator recognized in particular for the sublime Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Here sign his fictional feature film. With her eye as a photographer, she breathes into the film an elegant and raw aesthetic at the same time, avoiding any unnecessary glorification. Alongside the eternal pink, a solid cast: Andy Samberg embodies David E. Scherman, friend and colleague photographer of Miller, while Alexander Skarsgård or Marion Cottilard complete the distribution. Winslet has also described the latter as “national treasure” and it is not we who will contradict her! Concerned about detail, as for each of his roles, in order to better understand his character, Winslet used a replica of Miller’s Rolleiflex camera during , recreating some of his emblematic images. She explained that it allowed her to feel closer to the photographer and bring additional authenticity to her performance.

At its presentation at the Toronto 2023 festival, Lee Miller Was warmly welcomed, even if some criticisms underlined a sometimes classic narration. Many greet the incandescent performance of Winslet, capable of making Miller’s flamboyance and deep wounds feel. The film refuses to transform her heroine into a frozen icon, preferring to show her vulnerable, angry, funny and sometimes even unbearable. The film can be this evening on Canal + at 9:10 p.m., it would be a shame to miss it.
